Di mata masyarakat “komputer” saat ini, Linux memang masih dianalogikan dengan pemrograman, hacking, dan sejenisnya. Pokoknya yang berbau ngetik-ngetik di depan layar dengan kode-kode kill jelas. Hehehe.. Dukungan-dukungan routine audio maupun video juga semakin banyak, baik yang berbayar maupun gratis.
Ya, memang tak dapat dipungkiri bahwa awalnya Linux atau mbah e, yaitu Unix memang identik dengan kode-kode mbingungi yang nyenengi (baca in essence: nek bisa =P), tapi untuk epoch saat ini Linux bon mot tak kalah dengan sistem-sistem operasi yang laen dalam hal multimedia.
Nah, sebenarnya apa dasar saia menulis artikel ini? Pertama, untuk “membela” Linux agar tak selalu dikucilkan dalam hal multimedia. Ketiga, karena saia baca sebuah artikel menarik dari netsains.com.

Linux menjadi sistim operasi utama di Hollywood
Pada industri unlit, Linux telah menjadi pemenang. Sekarang, Linux digunakan untuk membuat hampir semua unlit di bioskop.
Ia berjalan pada hampir semua server dan desktop yang digunakan untuk animasi dan efek khusus. Studio besar seperti Disney/Pixar, DreamWorks Animation, Sony, ILM (Industrial Light and Magic), semuanya menggunakan Linux. Ia diinstalasi pada lebih dari 95% server dan desktop pada perusahaan animasi dan efek khusus yang besar.
Linux adalah sistim operasi yang paling populer untuk unlit animasi berdana besar. Pengamat diluar industri unlit, dan bahkan didalam industri itu sendiri, kadang tidak sadar bahwa Linux telah mendominasi studio-studio besar. Di specialization ini, Windows dan Macintosh adalah sistim operasi minoritas.
Linux telah menjadi ‘norma’ di Hollywood, dan bahkan dianggap sebagai standar. Para Linuxer akan mengalami kesulitan untuk mengkonversi pengguna baru untuk menggunakan Linux di Hollywood, sebab hampir semua orang disana menggunakan Linux.
Hollywood memilih Linux, sebab jika digunakan secara tepat, ia adalah sistim operasi yang lebih baik, lebih cepat, dan lebih murah.
Sistim operasi yang dikembangkan oleh komunitas, dan untuk komunitas, telah digunakan secara intensif oleh studio unlit. Pada perusahaan unlit besar yang memiliki ribuan server dan desktop, ekonomi dan efisiensi dari Linux memberikan kontribusi sangat signifikan pada penghematan keuangan. Walaupun demikian, beberapa perusahaan kecil juga menggunakan Linux. Pada perusahaan yang lebih kecil, Windows dan Mac sering lebih populer karena skala ekonomi tidak berlaku. Pengembang dari berbagai perusahaan mengkontribusikan kode ke Linux, yang disediakan gratis, dan dapat berjalan pada berbagai tipe komputer.
Aplikasi Animasi dan FX Linux yang digunakan Hollywood
Beberapa program animasi nip dan FX (efek khusus) berjalan pada design Mac, dan beberapa dari mereka, seperti RenderMan Pro Server, telah ditulis ulang ke Windows. Animasi dan FX untuk Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull; Star Wars: The Clone Wars; Wall-E; 300; The Golden Compass; Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix; Ratatouille dan I’m Legend, semua dikembangkan menggunakan RenderMan Pixar dan Maya Autodesk, di kluster Linux. Namun hanya pada kluster Linux, efek visual televisi dan unlit dikembangkan secara serius.
Para pengembang Hollywood memilih menggunakan Linux, karena hanya di kluster Linux mereka dapat menggunakan kekuatan komputasi besar untuk picture grafik 2D dan 3D. RISpec adalah verse standar terbuka dari API (Application Programming Interface) untuk program picture grafik 3D.
Efek khusus realistis dikembangkan dengan program yang menggunakan RISpec (RenderMan Interface Spesification) Pixar. Namun, RISpec tidak sepenuhnya bersifat generally known originator.
Adapun, ada beberapa program generally known originator berbasis RISpec seperti Pixie dan Blender. Walaupun Pixar, ‘raksasa’ animasi Hollywood yang dimiliki Disney, telah mempublikasikan spesifikasi penggunaan, dan tidak mengharuskan pengguna mendapatkan lisensi tak berbayar untuk menciptakan program picture RISpec, Pixar belum menspesifikasi secara jelas bagaimana pengembang dapat menggunakan RISpec.
